EMERGENCY DRILL AT KANGAR 22 NOV BY MARTS RACES

RACES - "Radio Amateur Civil and Emergency Services".

MARTS RACES team conducts Emergency drill in Kangar Perlis on 22th Nov to HAMs in the area.

RACES team comprising of 9M2DA, 9M2LC, 9M2LR, 9M2PX, 9W2PCK, 9W2ART, 9W2ZE, 9W2SOR, 9W2WOC, 9W2RAY, 9W2ACY and 9W2AXE conducted a briefing on Saturday 22 Nov night followed by a simulated emergency drill on Sunday. Participants were split into groups and taught how to relay messages from goverment agencies involved through field responders ( licensed HAM operators trained by RACES). It is vital that HAMs should be trained to convey messages amongst members, in addition integrate and syncronise communication procedures in disasters, so that we all speak the same language.
As volunteers, RACES objective and long term plan is to be able to prepare HAMS to work together and be trained in support of their local area that is hit by disaster. Most of us are volunteers and we do it during our free time hence supporting fellow HAM members is vital in order to ensure there is enough volunteers at the disaster area.
We must not forget that our role is to provide and assist in communication only during disaster. Furthermore, we can only assist if we are asked to do so. For this, we have to be a recognised body of trained personnel in communications.
Kindly contact MARTS or UNIARM if you are interested in RACES.

AFTER EVENT REPORT : HELP OA KG REKOM

THE ROAD TO POS SIMPO WAS NOT SO SIMPLE

We collected the last of the donated goods at Anis Putri 2 in TTDI and 4 cars made their way to Raub at 10 pm on Friday 7 November 2008. We broke our journey in Raub for the night. The next morning 6 cars in Raub were to rendezvous with another 3 cars in Gua Musang.

OUR TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS IN A CONVOY

After lunch in Gua Musang, volunteers in nine off road vehicles convoyed towards Pos Simpo. The group entered the trail around 1230pm, with a fine weather outlook.

We reached Kg Dandut at 530pm where some of the donated goods was unloaded. Kampong Dandut, was the first village along the journey of about 40km from the trail head. There we were told that the logging had stopped since September and it was difficult for the villagers to get in and out especially for Kampong Rekom the last village along the route.

By the time we left Kampung Dandut, the rain started to pour and the trail condition deteriorated. The vehicles were sliding as the trail had turned slippery.

The weather took a turn for the worst as we reached the logging camp at the last hill before Pos Simpo. One by one, the vehicle gathered momentum and made a run up the hill. Four cars made it half way but it was a struggle as they were sliding from side to side of the trail. At this point we wondered if the other cars could make it. Sure enough the next two cars got stuck along the way and the rain became heavier and more running water was flowing down the hill. Time was running out as it was getting dark.

MORE STORY ON ON THIS EVENT CLICK HERE...

Big thanks to all who donated goods to the many OA villages on the way there. A big thank you goes to the team members consisting of HAM and non Ham volunteers from ORS and Buaya Puchong who made this trip possible.

HELP ORANG ASLI OF KAMPUNG REKOM

Help OA of kampong Rekom Kelantan

Recently, Tok Batin Pak Abo (who is partially blind) of kg Rekom came to Gombak KL and called us requesting for assistance. The logging has stopped and it is more difficult for them to get out and get supplies. Kampung Rekom is the most remote and last village along the route after Pos Simpoh from Gua Musang. It is also less visited by outsiders and poor logging road condition makes it difficult to get there.

A few amateur radio members who are off road enthusiast are planning to go on the 7th Nov evening and return Sunday 9th Nov. Tok Batin Pak Abo gave us a list of items that they require . So far we have managed collect about 70% of the items from generous members. We are collecting donations from those who wish to donate and no matter how small the donations even a tin of milo or maggie mee, etc we will carry your items ( sikit2 jadi bukit). You can give second hand clothes (especially children’s clothes) and toys. We cannot take large items as we are limited in space please check with us before hand. If there are extras supplies that cannot be carried we will donate to the local orphanage.

Our plan is to leave from Anis Putri2 (former Alibaba restaurant) Taman Tun Dr Ismail on Friday evening about 9Pm . If you like to make any donations, please email to Azhar 9w2axe@gmail.com .

Thank you for your support

When 9M2 writes: The use of “standby” and “standing by” - 9M2ZC

The two phrases above are probably the most common phrases used in any QSO. One old radio friend of mine asked me whether something could be done to get people to apply it correctly. Well, since I share the same aspirations, to fulfill his wishes here is my piece.

When I say “This is 9M2ZC standing by.....” there are two elements in the statement. One is the person, that is me, and the verb “standing by’ which is the action happening at present and continuously. When there is an “am”, “is”, and “are” in the sentence and followed by “-ing” this constitutes to being a “present progressive tense” or in the old times called the “present continuous” or the “continuous present” tense.

The “am”, “is”, and “are” are the helping verbs and the “standing by” is the main verb. Some examples of present progressive tense are “I am driving right now”, “Muthu is teaching morse code to his students….”, “Hassan and Minah are having lunch …”

So coming back to our issue above, when I say “9M2ZC standby…” not only this is an incomplete statement, it does not fall under the category above although the action is, hence it is grammatically incorrect. On the other hand, it can also be construed as telling oneself (me) to standby!! No one in the right frame of mind should be telling himself what to do in spoken words. One’s own action should be based on voluntary and involuntary reaction.

If I say “9M2ZC standing by….” although the “is” is missing, it can be accepted as a correct sentence because it is taken as a short form of the sentence “This is 9M2ZC standing by…”, and is more appropriate to be used instead of the former. It fits in the category of a present progressive tense quite perfectly.

On a much wider perspective, if used in the context of Bahasa Melayu, eg. “….kembali kepada anda 9W2BBS, disini 9M2ZC standby….”, then it can be accepted as correct, if and only if, the word standby can be adopted as a Malay word. The golden rule is, if a sentence is constructed in Bahasa, then Bahasa must be used throughout, if the sentence is constructed in English, then English must be used throughout, the two languages MUST never be mixed in the same sentence.

I hope I have made myself clear and in summary whichever way the “standby” and “standing by” is used it will not cause your licence to be revoked, hi! Just exercise more caution in your QSO so that we become more ‘professional’ amateurs… and the above represent my personal views, I have no malicious intentions to anybody living or otherwise.

73, All the best, this is 9M2ZC signing off and clear….

Chinese Officials Give Kudos to Amateur Radio Operators

As disaster recovery efforts continue following the earthquake in the Wenchuan area of China's Sichuan province on May 12, China's Information Office of the State Council reports that the death toll has reached 67,183 persons as of May 27. Communications in some of the surrounding areas were cut off, and communications in some other areas experienced network congestion due to drastically increased traffic. According to the Chinese Radio Sports Association (CRSA) -- the Chinese IARU Member-Society -- Chinese government officials and the news media have recognized that when communications failed after the earthquake, Amateur Radio operators stepped in to provide vital links.
CRSA designated 14.270, 7.050 and 7.060 MHz for emergency communications use during the quake, but these frequencies are now no longer restricted for this use; however, should a severe aftershock occur, CRSA said it will make the call for them to be kept clear again.
On Monday, May 26, China Central Television (CCTV) reported that, "When all other communication means failed, Amateur Radio operators came out! An Amateur Radio emergency communication network was set up, and one of the commanders, Liu Hu [BG8AAS], called for Amateur Radio operators on air to provide services for disaster relief."

LOCAL NEWS: MARTS RACES TEAM ASSISTED IN COMMUNICATION TO RESCUE LOST CLIMBERS IN GUNUNG LEDANG ON 19 MAY.

May 1 2008, NorthJohor MARTS organised an (RACES) Emergency Communication Drill attended by hams from Segamat, Muar, Melaka, representatives from NESRAC and JASRA.
Hams were given an exposure on how important it is for hams to know how to set up a portable station. Elmers, 9M2WT, 9M2DA, 9M2FX and 9M2KMA were at hand to give hams some pointers. Hams present were given a basic description emergency communication protocol... dos and don'ts

Teams of hams were then sent to various parts of Bukit Kepong and from their locations, they sent messages back to base and to each other. By the end of the day, some teams were asking for more. So more will come in future.

18 days later... May 19, 2008..12 noon...our RACES practise were put to use.... NorthJohor MARTS received a call from Moi Adventure (Moi Adventure is a Gunung Ledang mountain guide/trekker group). Moi Adventure and NorthJohor have been planning an SAR Emergency Communication Exercise on the montains for hams. 40 trekkers have shown interests to be hams. This call told us that 6 climbers were lost since May 18.

Within 2 hours, we were at Sagil police station which was made the operation office. As we arrived... the police offficer in-charge requested our help to provide communication for the rescuers. Immediately we set up a communication centre at the Sagil police station with 9M2DA acting as Emergency Coordinator (EC) and activated our RACES protocol with fellow hams from Segamat, Muar and Melaka rushing in with their equipments and 4-wheel jalopies. Rescuers involved in the SAR were Bomba, JPA3 and Moi Adventure trekkers.
By 1600hrs rescue teams accompanied by hams moved up to scan the mountains.
We set up 3 more portable stations forming a parameter to monitor the rescuers. Hams stayed up as long as there were still rescuers in the mountains and the rescuers were up in the mountains until dawn!

At 4am, May 20, a ham with one of the rescue team manage to spot a fire on one of the peaks. They contacted the climbers and confirmed it was their signal. Finally, the climbers were found at 9.20am.

Many were impressed with our communication methods. Climbers' parents who monitored the rescue at our station were thankful so were the rescuers.

Moi Adventure and NorthJohor MARTS will still continue with our plans to hold an SAR Emergency Communication Exercise. It would probably take 2 days but it will be nothing compared to real live situations

CAR CONVOY CARNIVAL WITH ORPHANS OF LIMPAHAN KASIH

CAR CONVOY CARNIVAL WITH ORPHANS OF LIMPAHAN KASIH
Kuala Lumpur,6 April 2008 - After the MAULIDURRASUL celebration 2008 at the Limpahan Kasih orphanage in Puchong the convoy including celebrity guests left Tesco Puchong at 9.30 am 6th April. A total of 240 cars from various clubs eg BMW, Volvo, Honda jazz, Citra, Perdana V6 and super bikes participated in the event. Many Amateur radio members were also members of these clubs. Each of the cars carried 2 orphans or a celebrity.

Slowly making its way through KL in two groups escorted by 15 traffic police on motor bikes, the orphans felt like VIPs seated in the luxury cars - it was an unforgettable experience for them. The convoy was led by the police escort to major landmarks such as the parliament building, eye of malaysia in Titiwangsa, the twin towers, national museum and finally out to the wetlands way in Putrajaya. At the points where the convoy passed through KL traffic came to a stand still and left people wondering who was the VIP with a large entourage causing this Jam.

cover2
A big thank you to the KL Traffic Police who did an excellent job of keeping the convoy in line throughout the journey. Our own amateur radio Comm Car (9w2ice) had the opportunity to use his vehicle siren and flashing lights to assist the police in keeping the convoy together. The police was certainly amused to see the Comm Car in action.
The event ended with a late lunch, a singing and a photo session with the celebrities in the Wetlands.

UNIARM PROJECT : Help the Orang Asli of Belum Temengor

Orang Asli of Belum Temengor

Belum-Temengor is a rain forested area that was flooded when a dam was built in 1970’s. As a result; the higher grounds of the forested areas became islands and the Orang Asli’s (OA) had to adapt to their new life, being surrounded by water. They move around the area using bamboo rafts that they craft themselves.

The OA in Belum-Temengor are mainly from the Jahai and Temiar descendants. One particular village that is currently in good partnership with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) is Cuweh. The people in Cuweh are recruited as the main forest guides for MNS’s Hornbill Conservation project. With the help of MNS, UNIARM (United Amateur Radio) went to recce the area . There are 60 Jahai people in Cuweh, many of them are children. As Belum-Temengor is surrounded by lake water, accessibility to the surrounding OA settlements are made only by boats. The OA’s find it difficult to travel to the nearest town which would require them to take a boat and then a car, amounting to 2 hours travelling time. It is also very costly on their part as they do not have fixed jobs and they rely on forest products to sell, as a means to make money. Due to the distance and the cost of hiring and fuelling a boat, the Jahai OAs do not send their children to schools.

Photobucket

The Jahai OAs are friendly and warm people. Many of them are committed to better themselves and are also to an extent self sufficient. The forest has given them a steady income and they do not take more than what is necessary. With the flooding of the area for the dam, the Jahai OAs were forced to relocate and change their way of life.

The Orang Asli of Temenggor lake & Kg Cuweh need our help .

Water, which is a basic necessity in our lives and yet they do not have drinking water as the nearest spring water is 3 km away. Currently, they are taking water from the lake near the village and they have to boil it as more than often the water is contaminated. Water is actually a luxury item to these people. We take our clean water for granted. We can help by providing piping system to be connected to the nearby spring water or to build a well with a manual pump for them.

Their children aged 3 to 10 years do not go to school as it is too far for them and furthermore they are too young for boarding school. They are Malaysians too but these young Malaysians are growing up illiterate. Let's give their children a chance for a better life. One solution is by getting a basic teacher / even volunteers / retired individuals in a nearby town or KL to go in and teach them twice a week or on an ad-hoc basis.

Photobucket

We can assist them in having a better standard of living by being self sufficient. One way is by teaching them the method of fish farming. Cages and fry can be provided for them to start a small fish farm. In addition, when harvesting their honey ,we can show them a hygenic way to process their honey for better premiums to be sold to the local tourist.

UNIARM will endeavour to raise funds or sponsors for this project. More importantly we need volunteers to help out in the planning or carrying out of the project.

UNIARM also hope to organise a group convoy using the logging track to the nearest Kampung which is Kg Siong. We will bring food supplies and other donation in kinds to be distributed fully to four nearby villages.

This is a long term project and it would take time to accomplish. So its success will also depend on you. Hopefully we can help these people who are neglected by the main stream support and whose needs are often misunderstood . We look forward to generous members who would like to participate in our projects. Together we can make that difference.

When 9M writes : QRX , QRT & Pull the big switch

USAGE OF QRX- QRX means 'I will call you again at...' or 'When will you call me again'. You usually say 'QRX one ( one second or one minute )....QRX 15 minutes I am going to make a cup of coffee..". Some literature defines QRX as 'Hold on a minute, I will be right back". The Wikipedia difines it as "Hold on a minute, I will be right back..".
It is recommened that you to mention QRX followed by the time frame. If you say 'QRX 10 minutes..." you must call the station you are contacting in 10 minutes time. Of course plus-minus 10 seconds. If you are not sure how long, you can say "Please QRX for a few minutes, I got a land line..." or "QRX for a while, I'll be back after I finish my job" .
QRX does not mean 'I am going QRT but I am not closing down the station'. In fact on phone several essays suggested that it is better not to use codes made for CW. If you want to sign just say you want to sign. You can monitor after signing. You can also go to fish market after signing. If you pull the big switch then you switch off your station. Sometimes you say '..see you again further down the log..'. Log can mean the logbook. His station will be the last station when you contact him. Then there will be another last station and last and last; further down the log.
Other words which you can use is 'please stand-by','hold on'. Or you can say ' I am signing but I will be monitoring'. Sadly enough now many Amateur members are using QRX to mean QRT and Temporary QRT. QRT does not mean 'closing down the station'. It means '...stop sending..'. Your radio can still be on. However, if you are closing down station you can say pull the big switch, your radio is off.

GOOD NEWS FOR HAMS VISITING AUSTRALIA

AUSTRALIA ISSUES CLASS LICENCE FOR VISITING AMATEURS

The Wireless Institute of Australia advises that on 14 February 2008 a Class Licence issued by the Australian regulator, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), allowing visiting amateurs to operate while in Australia came into effect.
The Class Licence is issued under the Australian Radio communications legislation, and allows any overseas amateur visiting Australia to operate for up to 90 days after each entry to Australia. A visiting amateur does not have to make any application or payment to operate, but must hold evidence of a licence or qualification recognised by ACMA and a call sign issued by the administration that issued the licence orqualification.
The conditions of operation are fully set out in the Class Licence, including the 5 levels of operation permitted.
The Class Licence may be found on the WIA’s website
The level of operation, which range from the privileges and bands allowed to the Australian Advanced licence to a 146 to 148 MHz low power FM licence (essentiallyfor hand held operation), depends on the level of the overseas licence.
Overseas licences and the equivalent level are set out in the Table of Equivalent Qualifications and Licences which can be found on the ACMA’s website. The URL for the part of the ACMA site ‘Apparatus Licensing – Amateurs Visiting Australia’that includes the table is: ACMA WEBSITE
There are currently a number of errors and omissions in the Table of Equivalent Qualifications and Licences and the WIA is assisting ACMA in identifying them.Any suggestions should be emailed to the WIA at nationaloffice@wia.org.au
It is hoped that Australia will shortly become party to the CEPT T/R 61-01 for the benefit of Australian amateurs travelling overseas. The WIA is delighted that all visiting amateurs will now find it so easy to operate in Australia.

APRS Talk

To: Alibaba regulars
This Friday Eyeball on 1st Feb 2008 will be at MOSIN at Jalan Aminuddin Baki ( please note there 2 MOSIN in TTDI) Map attached. This is also our temporary hangout on a daily basis until the New Alibaba opens after CNY with new name...... hopefully.
I am also sad to announce that the hand print wall of "shame " is no more. ....gone forever ! for the moment. Unless we decide to do a new one in future.
We are still waiting for HAMs to organise eyeball TT in their Areas perhaps after CNY. Automatic Positioning Reporting System "APRS" talk by a HAM member from Japan at MOSIN TTDI 31 Jan Thursday.
We are hoping to have Mr Art from Japan and his friend Martin From Holland to give a talk on "APRS". Today Thursday 31 Jan 2008 at MOSIN at about 8.30 pm. This is a last minute arrangements and unfortunately rush for time. We hope we can organise a proper talk next time. This is the plan so far, however, if there is any change will anounce on RKK about 6pm to 7pm. Please monitor RKK if you interested to join the talk. Alternatively you can email me or phone me for updates. This is a casual adhoc arrangement, nothing formal so those interested in APRS do join us as it would be interesting to learn. Sorry for the last minute arrangements.
